LUTW Privacy Policy

Effective Date: March 1st, 2018

Thank you for your interest in the Light Up The Web browser extension (“LUTW”). We take your privacy seriously and want you to understand what information we collect when you use LUTW, how we may use that information, and how to contact us with any questions about this privacy policy (the “Policy”). Please make sure to read this Policy carefully because it sets out our information practices in connection with LUTW. Please keep in mind that your use of LUTW constitutes your agreement to this Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, you are not authorized to use LUTW.

What information we collect and how such information is used

LUTW captures usage information, such as the source of your saved content (e.g., URL) and any text you have highlighted on web pages. LUTW also records web browsing data with respect to the URLs you have visited, creating a linked history of interactions. We may use any or all of that information to help provide users with a better experience using LUTW, to help solve technical problems with the services available directly or indirectly in connection with LUTW, and to calculate overall usage statistics.

When you use LUTW, we will automatically collect certain information about your visits to websites (each, a “Site”) using tracking technology. Such information may include, without limitation, your Internet Protocol address ("IP Address"), your unique device or user ID, your email address, the referring website address, the content and pages that you access on the Site, the dates and times that you visit the Site and the duration of your visit and other interactions with the Site. We may also capture the user agent string from your device which helps us classify the type of device you are using to interact with the Site (e.g. desktop, tablet, mobile device) and, with the help of a user agent parsing library, we may capture the browser version, the device version and the operating system. The user agent string does not, however, collect any personally identifiable information. As further discussed below, we use certain technology, including cookies and Web Storage API, to automatically collect certain personally identifiable information such as email address that we may then use for system administration, troubleshooting, general user statistics and analysis and to identify you when you visit a Site through your computer to help us enhance your online experience and make our advertising more relevant to you. Certain features of LUTW are only available through the use of this technology. In addition, aggregate download information may also be collected from this non-personally and personally identifiable information. We may use any such data collected for improving the products and services offered by us.

Cookies, Web Storage API and other Technology.

As mentioned above, LUTW may use cookies, Web Storage API and other similar tracking technology. Cookies are small text files that websites place in your browser when you visit them. When you return to a Site, LUTW can access its previously placed cookie to uniquely identify your browser. Cookies accomplish several different things. They recall your preferences at a website, help content render more efficiently, and improve the overall user experience on a website. They can also help advertisers see what interests you and what advertising may be relevant to you. Our cookies do not collect personally identifiable information; the information collected via the cookies is in an aggregate, non-identifiable form. We do, however, store a unique identifier in the cookie that may tie back to a consumer record in our databases that contains personally identifiable information you have voluntarily provided us. LUTW also uses Web Storage API to store, locally within your browser, non-personally identifiable usage and web browsing data regarding your website visits. For as long as LUTW is installed on your device, LUTW may access your device’s Web Storage API and capture the data stored in that location, which we may use to help LUTW perform more effectively and to improve the overall product experience.

If you do not agree to the use of cookies as described in this Policy, please disable them. In order to do this, follow the instructions provided by your browser (usually located within the "Help", "Tools" or "Edit" menu). Disabling a cookie or category of cookie does not delete the cookie from your browser; you will need to do this yourself by choosing the option on your device to delete cookies. If you have disabled one or more cookies, we may still use information collected from cookies prior to your disabled preference being set, however, we will stop using the disabled cookie to collect any further information. Please note that disabling or deleting a cookie does not delete data stored in your device’s Web Storage API. Should you wish to delete such data from your device’s Web Storage API, you must do so separately by following the applicable instructions on your device. Please be advised that, if you do choose to disable cookies or to delete data from your device’s Web Storage API, certain features of LUTW may not be available to you or may not operate as effectively and we may not be able to provide you with certain services. For further information on cookies, including how to see what cookies have been set on your device and how to manage and delete them, visit http://www.allaboutcookies.org/

In addition to the above, to improve the product experience, LUTW may use the Google Analytics™ service as an analytical tool to collect non-personal information in the form of various usage and user metrics. Please note that we comply with Google Chrome Web Store’s user data policies with respect to our use of such Google Analytics data. To the extent that LUTW utilizes the Google Analytics service, your web browser will also automatically send certain information to Google® when you use LUTW. To understand how Google uses such data, please visit www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/

How We Protect Your Information

LUTW collects and store some personally identifiable information. Should you choose to voluntarily provide us with any personally identifiable information through your communications with us, however, we will take commercially reasonable steps to protect such information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction. Please keep this in mind should you choose to disclose any personally identifiable information to us or to any other party via the Internet or through e-mail. To the extent that you choose to provide us with personally identifiable information, we may use that information in connection with the purpose for which it was provided. Further, we may share that information in response to a legal process to comply with appropriate applicable law, to enforce our legal and contractual rights, or to protect our rights and property and/or that of LUTW users or others. In addition, if at some point we establish subsidiaries or other related companies, or merge with or are acquired by another company, we may disclose any information to them that we have collected as described herein, in which case we will request that they abide by this Policy. We may also disclose any personally identifiable information that you have voluntarily provided to us to a potential acquirer, although such disclosure would be subject to normal and customary confidentiality requirements.
